Texas school districts can support and
retain beginning teachers for half the cost of replacing
them. For Texas beginning teachers, teacher support equals
teacher success. Teacher success equals success for Texas
students. Success for Texas students equals success for
Texas.
The Texas Beginning Educator Support System (TxBESS)
is a program designed to keep first and second year
teachers in the classroom and increase their effectiveness.
Performance Standards:
Performance standards are the heart of the TxBESS
program. They encompass all the ares of teaching:
- Planning and preparation
- Classroom environment
- Instruction and communication
- Professional development and communication
Training:
One reason some mentor programs fail is the lack
of adequate mentor and administrator training. In TxBESS,
everyone who works with beginning teachers is trained
to understand beginning teacher development, build
relationships with beginning teachers, and gather and
analyze data for the TxBESS Activity Profile. Mentors,
principals, and university partners are all trained
to provide support for the beginning teacher, thus
ensuring a successful program.
Coaching:
Through TxBESS mentors assume a variety of roles
with their beginning teachers, mentors learn and apply
basic coaching skills. Through the mentor's use of questioning
techniques, beginning teachers learn to reflect on
their teaching and make improvements even when their
mentors are not present.
K-16 Collaboration:
One of the key points of TxBESS success is K-16 collaboration.
Teacher preparation faculty members and public school
personnel work together to promote the beginning teacher's
success.
